Radstadt with Charming Old Town
Mediaeval town with flair – surrounded by historical town walls
Situated on a plateau with slopes on three sides is the 700 year old town of Radstadt, the main resort in the Ennspongau region. In the 13th century the whole plateau was reinforced and Radstadt received as only town in the archbishopric of Salzburg in the mountains its town charter.
Radstadt has braved many blazes, the farmers’ war of 1525/26 and a flood of refugees during the 2nd World War. The town today stands proudly as an endearing mediaeval town with picturesque squares and romantic town pond, small shops and imposing buildings. Around the old town there are many outlying districts where the majority of the population live.
Culture of the highest Level, Customs & Traditions
Thanks to dedicated inhabitants of Radstadt the cultural scene has grown over the years and offers a wide spectrum of events. In honour of Paul Hofhaimer the “Paul Hofhaimer Days” take place every year. Radstadt’s most famous citizen was a well-known organ player and composer who was court organist to Kaiser Maximilian I.
The Radstadt Culture Circle also offers an interesting programme all year round. Once a week a Farmers’ Market with lots of seasonal produce takes place in the town square. Here you’ll find fresh vegetables, freshly-caught fish, golden honey and colourful flowers. Harvest Festival events such as the Arts & Craft Market, the Dumpling Festival and the traditional Guards’ Festival are just some of the annual highlights in Radstadt.
